{"id":8663,"date":"2025-09-12T08:41:34","date_gmt":"2025-09-12T06:41:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/snusforumet.se\/?p=8663"},"modified":"2025-12-08T10:09:58","modified_gmt":"2025-12-08T09:09:58","slug":"most-pouch-consumers-are-former-smokers-us-study-shows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/snusforumet.se\/en\/most-pouch-consumers-are-former-smokers-us-study-shows\/","title":{"rendered":"Most pouch consumers are former smokers, US study shows"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Nicotine pouches are more likely to serve as a tool for tobacco harm reduction and don\u2019t appear to be the gateway into nicotine use that many fear, new research on pouch consumers from the United States shows.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A new study from Rutgers University reveals that most adult pouch users in the United States are current or former tobacco users, many of whom appear to be using pouches as a step toward quitting more dangerous nicotine products like cigarettes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Published in <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2838608\"><em>JAMA Network Open<\/em><\/a>, the study provides the first national estimates of daily nicotine pouch use in the United States, and paints a cautiously optimistic picture of who is using these products and why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur results suggest that adults may be using nicotine pouches for harm reduction, given that use is highest among those that have recently quit another tobacco product or e-cigarettes,\u201d said Cristine D. Delnevo, director of the Rutgers Institute for Nicotine and Tobacco Studies, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rutgers.edu\/news\/nicotine-pouches-may-offer-path-reduced-tobacco-harm\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Most pouch consumers are former smokers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The study analyzed data from over 110,000 US adults, collected through the US Census Bureau\u2019s Tobacco Use Supplement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers looked specifically at pouch use patterns before and after 2019 \u2013 the year pouches became widely available in the US market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While overall use remains low \u2013 just 2.5 percent of adults reported using nicotine pouches \u2013 the study found that usage was almost entirely limited to people with a history of tobacco use.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Non-Hispanic white men were the most likely group of nicotine pouch consumers, and usage among those who had never smoked or used tobacco products was \u201cvirtually non-existent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While use of nicotine pouches has increased among young people in the United States in recent years, <a href=\"https:\/\/snusforumet.se\/en\/new-study-dispels-nicotine-gateway-myth\/\">overall uptake remains low<\/a>. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/tobacco-products\/youth-and-tobacco\/results-annual-national-youth-tobacco-survey-nyts#2024%20Findings%20on%20Youth%20Use%20for%20Nicotine%20Pouch%20Products\">2024 National Youth Tobacco Survey<\/a>, only 1.8 percent of US middle and high school students reported using nicotine pouches.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople who have never used tobacco products should not suddenly be using nicotine pouches,\u201d Delnevo added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut for people who smoke or use other nicotine products and don\u2019t want to stop using nicotine, switching completely from the more harmful product and moving down the risk continuum with nicotine pouches is likely good for public health.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A shift in US nicotine consumption<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In January 2025, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) <a href=\"https:\/\/snusforumet.se\/en\/us-fda-finds-nicotine-pouches-are-lower-risk-help-smokers-quit\/\">authorized the marketing of ZYN<\/a> \u2013 the first nicotine pouch to receive such approval. Although pouches cannot legally be marketed as quit-smoking aids, the Rutgers team notes that many users are clearly treating them as lower-risk alternatives to cigarettes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs nicotine pouches gain increased attention in the U.S., many agree that we need to better understand who is using these products and how,\u201d said study co-author Mary Hrywna, associate professor at Rutgers School of Public Health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis study offers a snapshot of use patterns that is informative and, at least for now, somewhat reassuring.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The findings have important policy implications.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They suggest that adults are not being lured into nicotine addiction through pouches, but instead are transitioning away from combustible tobacco.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This directly challenges the \u201cgateway\u201d narrative that continues to dominate headlines and some public health discussions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Swedish Experience offers proof about pouches<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Sweden, where both snus and nicotine pouches are widely used, smoking rates have plummeted to among the lowest in the world.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This transition has not been fueled by new nicotine users \u2013 but by former smokers seeking less harmful alternatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Patrik Str\u00f6mer, Secretary General of the Association of Swedish Snus Manufacturers, sees the Rutgers study as an important step in helping dismantle outdated myths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis study confirms what we\u2019ve seen in Sweden for years: nicotine pouches are not a gateway into smoking \u2013 they are a gateway out,\u201d he tells Snusforumet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMost nicotine pouch consumers today are either former smokers or people trying to quit. And as snus and pouch use has gone up, smoking has continued to fall.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sweden\u2019s success with harm reduction has gained international attention.
