Industry leaders, researchers, and politicians gathered recently to discuss how Sweden can move from moralism to leadership and treat snus like a vaccine against smoking.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In practice, Sweden is a smoke-free country, largely thanks to snus and nicotine pouches. But could Swedish nicotine innovations become the next big export wave?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That was the topic of discussion at a seminar at the recent Almedalen political gathering in Visby titled, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/almedalsveckan.info\/rg\/almedalsveckan\/evenemang-almedalsveckan\/2025\/4533\">Snus, Sweden and Public Health \u2013 Are We Ready for the Next Innovation?<\/a>\u201d, hosted by Emplicure Consumer.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Innovations that save lives&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mattias Josander, CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.emplicure.com\/\">Emplicure Consumer<\/a>, opened the seminar by setting the tone.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have eliminated smoking as a public health problem in Sweden. Not through prohibition \u2013 but through innovation,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shortly afterwards, he also brought up a fitting comparison he had recently heard at the <a href=\"https:\/\/gfn.events\/\">Global Forum on Nicotine (GFN) <\/a>conference in Warsaw:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSnus and nicotine pouches may be the vaccine of this century.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emplicure, with roots at Uppsala University, is developing new material technologies to improve nicotine delivery in pouches.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;Their new bio-based materials enable faster absorption \u2013 with lower nicotine content \u2013 which could potentially attract more smokers to a less harmful alternative.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard to understand why we\u2019re not prouder of this [Swedish snus]. We have a Swedish invention that can save hundreds of thousands of lives every year,\u201d\u00a0Josander added.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A public health tool \u2013 not a villain\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Anette Rosengren, Nordic CEO at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swedishmatch.com\/\">Swedish Match<\/a>, highlighted how Sweden\u2019s innovation in nicotine products has led to global success.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re very proud of Pippi Longstocking, Abba, the ball bearing\u2026 But when it comes to inventing a way to make a population smoke-free, it is not politically correct to talk about it,\u201d she said&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think we need to be proud that we\u2019re actually selling better public health.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0Stig-Bj\u00f6rn Ljunggren, head of the <a href=\"https:\/\/snuskommissionen.se\/en\/startpage\/\">Snus Commission<\/a>, argued that resistance to nicotine innovation is often rooted in moralism and emotions rather than facts.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s ideology,\u201d he explained. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn other words, a person who sees the world ideologically refuses to accept facts that contradict their beliefs. They lock themselves in and only look for information that confirms their position.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Time for a Swedish position in the EU&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone on the panel agreed on what\u2019s needed for the rest of Europe to improve its public health policy: a clear Swedish position in the EU&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/snusforumet.se\/en\/ted-revision-sweden-needs-more-influence-over-eu-nicotine-tax-proposals\/\">upcoming legislation on tobacco and nicotine products<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important to have proper regulation. Because without regulation, things can go wrong,\u201d Rosengren stated in reference to the challenge many European countries have in combating smoking. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If a healthier alternative like\u00a0nicotine pouches were more accessible and reasonably priced, <a href=\"https:\/\/snusforumet.se\/en\/snus-saves-thousands-of-lives-in-sweden-every-year-study\/\">many lives could be saved<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Josander concluded the discussion with a call to action:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSweden has the chance to be a world leader.
