{"id":8474,"date":"2025-05-12T07:51:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-12T05:51:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/snusforumet.se\/?p=8474"},"modified":"2025-05-10T11:39:34","modified_gmt":"2025-05-10T09:39:34","slug":"swedish-mep-jessica-polfjard-europe-needs-more-snus-not-more-bans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/snusforumet.se\/en\/swedish-mep-jessica-polfjard-europe-needs-more-snus-not-more-bans\/","title":{"rendered":"Swedish MEP Jessica Polfj\u00e4rd: Europe needs more snus, not more bans"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>As EU leaders prepare to overhaul tobacco rules, Swedish MEP Jessica Polfj\u00e4rd is calling for a reality check \u2014 and defending Sweden\u2019s success story in the fight against smoking.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSnus is already banned outside of Sweden, and now we\u2019re seeing the same push against white snus,\u201d Polfj\u00e4rd warns in a new opinion piece published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bt.se\/artikel\/det-svenska-snuset-behover-skyddas\/\">Bor\u00e5s Tidning newspaper<\/a>, using the common Swedish term for nicotine pouches.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut the <a href=\"https:\/\/snusforumet.se\/en\/swedens-success-in-nicotine-pouch-regulations-lessons-for-the-eu\/\">Swedish model<\/a> is not a problem \u2014 it\u2019s a solution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fear and overregulation: the real threats<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the piece, Polfj\u00e4rd<strong> <\/strong>explains that snus has helped Sweden achieve the lowest smoking rate in the EU.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to recent statistics, daily smoking has dropped to nearly five percent, while countries like Germany, Bulgaria, and Greece still see more than 20 percent of adults lighting up every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite this, some EU members are doubling down on <a href=\"https:\/\/snusforumet.se\/en\/when-will-europe-overcome-the-current-moral-panic-over-nicotine-pouches\/\">heavy-handed regulation<\/a>, including calls to restrict or even ban newer, smokeless products like nicotine pouches through high taxes or extreme packaging requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a strange idea that what\u2019s unfamiliar must be dangerous,\u201d writes Polfj\u00e4rd.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut letting fear dictate tobacco policy will only hurt public health.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Letting the numbers speak for themselves<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>She points out that Sweden has more or less already met the EU\u2019s own goal to cut daily smoking to below five percent by 2040 thanks to snus and nicotine pouches, which are significantly less harmful than smoking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTobacco and nicotine use won\u2019t vanish overnight,\u201d Polfj\u00e4rd argues.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat we can do is offer better alternatives to help people quit smoking and improve their health.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Jessica Polfj\u00e4rd: a model to export, not ban<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Polfj\u00e4rd believes the <a href=\"https:\/\/snusforumet.se\/fakta\/the-swedish-experience\/\">Swedish tobacco model<\/a> isn\u2019t something to fear or suppress. It\u2019s something to learn from.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She welcomes stronger rules to keep nicotine out of the hands of minors and ensure serious producers follow the rules, but not at the cost of cutting off access for adults who need safer alternatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Swedish exemption for snus must be defended,\u201d she writes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd that includes white snus. For us, it\u2019s obvious that snus should continue to be sold in Sweden as it always has.
