{"id":8266,"date":"2025-01-27T17:15:16","date_gmt":"2025-01-27T16:15:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/snusforumet.se\/?p=8266"},"modified":"2025-01-27T17:15:16","modified_gmt":"2025-01-27T16:15:16","slug":"us-fda-finds-nicotine-pouches-are-lower-risk-help-smokers-quit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/snusforumet.se\/en\/us-fda-finds-nicotine-pouches-are-lower-risk-help-smokers-quit\/","title":{"rendered":"US FDA finds nicotine pouches are \u2018lower risk\u2019, help smokers quit"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Following an extensive scientific review, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has concluded that 20 varieties of nicotine pouches are less harmful than cigarettes and an effective alternative for adult smokers who want to quit.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The finding lies behind the US agency\u2019s decision to grant marketing authorisation to 20 ZYN-brand nicotine pouches produced by Swedish Match.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo receive marketing authorizations, the FDA must have sufficient evidence that the new products offer greater benefits to population health than risks,\u201d Dr. Matthew Farrelly of the FDA\u2019s Center for Tobacco Products <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-authorizes-marketing-20-zyn-nicotine-pouch-products-after-extensive-scientific-review\">said in a statement<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe data show that these nicotine pouch products meet that bar by benefiting adults who use cigarettes and\/or smokeless tobacco products and completely switch to these products.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>FDA\u2019s first nicotine pouch authorisation<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The decision marks the FDA\u2019s first marketing authorisation for an oral nicotine product and allows the products to remain on the market in the US.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nicotine pouches have been available in the US for nearly a decade while the FDA has conducted an extensive scientific review to determine whether they should be formally authorised.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The products have become increasingly popular in recent years, including among young people, sparking fears among anti-smoking groups that pouches could become a gateway to smoking.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, after assessing the available evidence, the FDA found that \u201cthe potential of the new products to benefit adults who smoke or use smokeless tobacco outweighs the risk to youth\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The agency cited the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/tobacco-products\/youth-and-tobacco\/results-annual-national-youth-tobacco-survey\">2024 National Youth Tobacco Survey<\/a> which revealed that only 1.8 percent of US middle and high school students reported currently using nicotine pouches.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Harm reduction as a strategy <\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Patrik Str\u00f6mer, Secretary General of the Association of Swedish Snus Manufacturers, describes the FDA authorisation for ZYN as a \u201cmajor boost\u201d for harm reduction advocates who have long argued that nicotine pouches are an important tool to help adult smokers quit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe FDA\u2019s decision strengthens the argument for harm reduction as a strategy,\u201d he says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a signal to policymakers in the rest of the world that alternative nicotine products have an important role in reducing tobacco-related diseases.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018Foolish\u2019 to villainize nicotine <\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Str\u00f6mer contrasts the FDA finding with nicotine \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/snusforumet.se\/en\/when-will-europe-overcome-the-current-moral-panic-over-nicotine-pouches\/\">fear-mongering<\/a>\u201d among public health officials in the EU, where several countries are considering outright bans on nicotine pouches.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cVillanizing nicotine through claims that cigarettes and alternative products are equally dangerous looks even more foolish in light of the FDA decision,\u201d he says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s high time that anti-nicotine organizations stop spreading myths that nicotine itself is the cause of tobacco-related diseases. The science is clear: combustion is the problem, not nicotine.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He hopes policymakers and public health groups in Europe can take inspiration from the FDA and create regulations \u201cbased on facts rather than outdated attitudes towards nicotine\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>\u2018Smokers need alternatives, not bans\u2019<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe FDA decision is a victory for both consumers and public health. Now is the time for more countries to follow suit and make harm reduction a central part of their tobacco policies,\u201d he says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe need to shift the focus from ideology to science. Europe\u2019s smokers need alternatives \u2013 not bans.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The January 2025 authorisation for ZYN marks the second time the Swedish Match \u2013 which since 2022 has been owned by Phillip Morris International \u2013 has been the subject of a history FDA decision.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2019, <a href=\"https:\/\/snusforumet.se\/en\/us-fda-confirms-snus-is-less-dangerous-than-cigarettes\/\">the agency granted<\/a> the company\u2019s \u201cGeneral\u201d brand of tobacco snus a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/tobacco-products\/advertising-and-promotion\/modified-risk-tobacco-products\"> Modified Risk Tobacco Product (MRTP)<\/a>.
