Nicotine consumers and tobacco harm reduction advocates can now have a direct impact on EU rules governing nicotine pouches and other tobacco products. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But they need to act by June 17th.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is a great opportunity for ordinary citizens to make sure policymakers in Brussels know their views about how new tobacco regulations should look,\u201d says Patrik Str\u00f6mer, Secretary General of the Association of Swedish Snus Manufacturers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On May 20th, the European Commission opened a \u201ccall for evidence\u201d process<\/a> as part of its ongoing evaluation of the current EU legislative framework for tobacco control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis evaluation will assess to what extent the framework has fulfilled its goals and whether it is able to support a \u2018Tobacco-Free Generation\u2019 by 2040, as announced in the (sic) Europe\u2019s Beating Cancer Plan,\u201d the Commission explains on the webpage where citizens can contribute their views.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Easy to \u2018have your say\u2019 on nicotine pouches<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Anyone interested in or affected by changes in EU policies governing tobacco and nicotine products can share their views, including public authorities, businesses, civil society organisations, and individual citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The process for submitting comments is fairly straightforward and only takes a few minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Simply visit the EU\u2019s \u201cHave your say\u201d portal for tobacco legislation<\/a> and create a user profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Registered users can then login and submit their views on nicotine and tobacco regulation in the EU in any of the EU\u2019s 24 languages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The feedback period is open until midnight on 17 June 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018EU smokers\u2019 lives at stake\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Str\u00f6mer hopes anyone who uses snus, nicotine pouches, or e-cigarettes takes a few minutes to voice their thoughts on sensible tobacco regulation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the EU\u2019s recently adopted cancer plan<\/a> references e-cigarettes as a smoking cessation aid, he is nevertheless concerned that regulators in Brussels may fail to acknowledge the public health benefits of a harm reduction approach in any proposed changes to current tobacco regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe lives of Europe\u2019s roughly 120 million smokers are at stake,\u201d says Str\u00f6mer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe all have a responsibility to ensure policymakers don\u2019t come up with rules that unnecessarily restrict access to reduced-risk products for adult smokers and make it harder for them to switch from deadly cigarettes to safer alternatives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
