Swedish MEP Sara Skyttedal sees as \u201cvery serious\u201d the possibility that DG SANTE \u201cfabricated data\u201d about member states’ views on a possible nicotine pouch ban.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is difficult to free oneself from the suspicion that officials at the European Commission fabricated data in order to oppose alternatives to cigarettes,\u201d Skyttedal tells Snusforumet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf that is the case, then of course it is very serious.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The comments come in the wake of revelations published on Snusforumet<\/a> that DG SANTE exaggerated claims about member states\u2019 desire for an EU-wide ban on tobacco-free nicotine pouches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skyttedal submitted written questions to Commissioner Stella Kyriakides<\/a> the same day the suspicions came to light, arguing that DG SANTE\u2019s claims that a majority of member states are open to a total ban on nicotine pouches \u201csimply does not correlate with the evidence\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat is the basis for DG SANTE\u2019s statement in its presentation on 2 December 2021 that the majority of Member States are open to banning nicotine pouches?\u201d she asks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The presentation referred to by Skyttedal included results from a survey sent by DG SANTE to member states seeking input on nicotine pouches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The survey elicited a total of nine responses, with only one country – the Netherlands – calling nicotine pouch ban.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nevertheless, the Commission Directorate claimed that \u201cMost Member States have called for a EU level legislation that regulates these products (including banning nicotine pouches)\u201d in its presentation of the results. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skyttedal is concerned that DG SANTE may have purposely exaggerated the results to support bureaucrats\u2019 own agendas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere have been previous cases with activist officials at the European Commission with underlying agendas. It remains to be seen if this is the case here as well,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EU is currently grappling with how to regulate nicotine pouches and other \u201cnovel nicotine products\u201d that have emerged in recent years, claiming they pose \u201cspecific regulatory challenges\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tobacco harm reduction advocates argue that increasing the availability and variety of non-combustible alternatives would bring substantial public health benefits by making it easier for adult smokers to quit cigarettes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In early 2022, the European Parliament took what Skyttedal called an \u201cimportant step\u201d by acknowledging the potential for e-cigarettes as a smoking cessation tool<\/a> in the parliament\u2019s Special Committee on Beating Cancer (BECA) report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the Commission has previously demonstrated resistance to building a regulatory regime based on the relative risks of different nicotine products. Among other things, the Commission has refused to look at re-examining the current ban on snus<\/a> despite the fact that Sweden \u2013 the only EU member state where snus is legal \u2013 has the EU\u2019s lowest tobacco-related mortality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skyttedal previously called out what she sees as \u201cdishonesty\u201d by the European Commission<\/a> when it comes to its stance on tobacco regulations. At the time, she accused the Commission of \u201cwillful ignorance\u201d when it comes to the science on snus and \u201cideological opposition to tobacco and nicotine\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She believes the new revelations about DG SANTE’s attempt to misrepresent the findings of its own survey<\/a> is yet another example of the Commission acting against the EU\u2019s Beating Cancer Plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn order for Europe to reduce tobacco-related mortality, the use of cigarettes must be reduced. If this is to be possible, alternative nicotine products, such as nicotine pouches, cannot be over-regulated or banned,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf the European Commission nevertheless pursues that line, it will in a very obvious way counteract the objectives set in their own anti-cancer strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
