{"id":5227,"date":"2018-05-14T11:31:00","date_gmt":"2018-05-14T09:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/snusforumet.se\/?p=5227"},"modified":"2021-06-06T00:36:42","modified_gmt":"2021-06-05T22:36:42","slug":"snus-and-public-health-a-us-perspective","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/snusforumet.se\/en\/snus-and-public-health-a-us-perspective\/","title":{"rendered":"Snus and public health: a US perspective"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>As snus is a uniquely Swedish product with a long and rich tradition in the country, it is only natural that the debate over snus in Sweden has taken on a uniquely Swedish perspective.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is all the more interesting, then, to take a look at how snus is discussed in other countries, not least in the USA, where snus was made legal as recently as 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gp.se\/nyheter\/hundratusentals-liv-hade-kunnat-r%C3%A4ddas-1.5963138\">interview with the Swedish newspaper G\u00f6teborgs-Posten<\/a>, the American researcher Brad Rodu points out that snus is still relatively unknown in the USA, which has had other smoke-free tobacco products called &#8220;moist snuff&#8221; or \u201cdipping tobacco\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSwedish snus has traditionally had different flavours than the American moist snuff and also a different production method,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Rodu, a professor of medicine at the University of Louisville, many Americans continue to believe that all tobacco products are equally dangerous, with this misconception spread by US health authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He told the newspaper that he admired what he called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/snusforumet.se\/fakta\/the-swedish-experience\/\">The Swedish Experience<\/a>&#8220;, which has led to the risk of a man dying from a tobacco-related illness being lower than in any other European country, despite the fact that tobacco consumption is at a comparable level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf men in all EU countries had smoked to the same extent as Swedish men, almost 300,000 deaths could have been avoided every year,\u201d he told the newspaper.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As snus is a uniquely Swedish product with a long and rich tradition in the country, it is only natural that the debate over snus&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[254],"tags":[375,260,294],"class_list":["post-5227","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-opinions","tag-brad-rodu","tag-swedish-experience","tag-usa-2"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
