Using snus does not increase the risk of heart failure or other cardiovascular disease mortality, a new study has found, confirming the findings of previous studies on the topic.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest study to examine whether snus may be a risk factor for cardiovascular disease was published in May 2021<\/a> in the British medical journal BMC Medicine<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The authors focused on a number of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) typically associated with smoking, including myocardial infarction, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, aortic valve stenosis (AVS), abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), and stroke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To carry out the study, the authors looked at data from 41,162 Swedish adults between 56- and 94-years-old years. Participants were asked to fill out a questionnaire regarding their snus use, lifestyle, and health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No increased risk for cardiovascular disease<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Participants were then followed up over a period of eight years to determine whether they had suffered from any cardiovascular-related incidents. The authors then carried out a statistical analysis of the data, including controlling for other risk factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFindings from the analyses adjusted for smoking that are based on the entire cohort, do not support a detrimental effect of snus use on the risk of major heart and valvular diseases, AAA, or CVD mortality,\u201d the authors found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The results of the study are largely in line with previous research on the association of snus with the increased risk of diseases assoicated with smoking. However, the results did deviate slightly from previous research when it came to snusers who had never smoked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, a study carried out in 2014<\/a> found snusers who have never smoked had no association with increased risk of stroke. In contrast, the new study did an association with a slightly increased risk of stroke among the same cohort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A further examination reveals, however, that the 2014 study is based on a population of 32,542 snusers who never smoked, while the new study\u2019s results are based on a sample of 418 snusers who never smoked. The 2014 study also had a follow up period much longer than the eight-year follow up of the new study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Snus is much less harmful than smoking\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The authors themselves go on to write that a number of Swedish studies have found \u201cno association between the use of snus and incident stroke in non-smokers or in the entire sample analysis adjusted for smoking status\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn the pooled analysis of eight Swedish prospective cohort studies, including never-smoking men, no association between the use of snus and the risk of overall stroke or any stroke types were observed,\u201d they write.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Patrik Str\u00f6mer. Secretary General of the Association of Swedish Snus Manufacturers, the new study \u201cmore or less confirms what we already know\u201d. He attributes the slightly different result of the current study to the smaller sample size of snusers who have never smoked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis is a solid piece of research, but previous studies examining stroke risk for snusers who have never smoked are more robust,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe bottom line is that we have further scientific evidence demonstrating that using snus is much less harmful than smoking.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
