{"id":4928,"date":"2019-10-23T10:02:00","date_gmt":"2019-10-23T08:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/snusforumet.se\/?p=4928"},"modified":"2021-04-12T12:32:13","modified_gmt":"2021-04-12T10:32:13","slug":"us-fda-confirms-snus-is-less-dangerous-than-cigarettes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/snusforumet.se\/en\/us-fda-confirms-snus-is-less-dangerous-than-cigarettes\/","title":{"rendered":"US FDA confirms snus is less dangerous than cigarettes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Snus from Swedish Match will be the first tobacco product ever to be designated as &#8220;less risky&#8221; in the US following a historic decision by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe see it as a scientific recognition for the research that has been conducted on Swedish snus,\u201d Swedish Match spokesperson Patrik Hildingsson told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aftonbladet.se\/nyheter\/a\/dOzKKJ\/swedish-match-far-kalla-snus-mindre-farligt-an-cigg--i-usa\">Aftonbladet newspaper<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Swedish Match started the process of applying for permission to market snus in the US as a less harmful alternative to cigarettes back in 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lower risk of cancer and heart disease<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Just over five years later, the historic announcement finally arrived that eight of Swedish Match&#8217;s &#8220;General&#8221; brand snus will receive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/tobacco-products\/advertising-and-promotion\/modified-risk-tobacco-products\">Modified Risk Tobacco Product (MRTP)<\/a> designation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The decision allows the company to market snus in the US using the following language: \u201cUsing General Snus instead of cigarettes puts you at a lower risk of mouth cancer, heart disease, lung cancer, stroke, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Today\u2019s action demonstrates the viability of the pathway for companies to market specific tobacco products as less harmful to consumers,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-grants-first-ever-modified-risk-orders-eight-smokeless-tobacco-products\">said Ned Sharpless, Acting FDA Commissioner<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FDA gives snus special status in US<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The decision is seen as an important milestone in tobacco regulation in the United States. This is the first time the FDA has chosen to classify a tobacco product as less risky, or so-called &#8220;reduced-risk tobacco&#8221;, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apnews.com\/84141a5ce4d04dffa33341402ba75eeb\">AP news agency<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s interesting that at a time when tobacco regulations are getting tougher and tougher, the FDA chose to give us this special status,\u201d Hildingsson told Aftonbladet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Patrik Str\u00f6mer, Secretary General of the Association of Swedish Snus Manufacturers, welcomed the announcement as a major step forward for public health in the United States and for the introduction of the principle of harm reduction in tobacco regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHopefully, authorities in other countries that currently ban snus but allow more dangerous cigarettes will now review their tobacco regulation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Snus from Swedish Match will be the first tobacco product ever to be designated as &#8220;less risky&#8221; in the US following a historic decision by&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[218],"tags":[288,309,307,308,294],"class_list":["post-4928","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-regulations","tag-fda","tag-mrtp","tag-patrik-hildingsson-2","tag-swedish-match-2","tag-usa-2"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
