{"id":4904,"date":"2020-05-27T11:03:00","date_gmt":"2020-05-27T09:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/snusforumet.se\/?p=4904"},"modified":"2021-04-11T22:10:54","modified_gmt":"2021-04-11T20:10:54","slug":"snus-and-covid-19-sweden-launches-new-research-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/snusforumet.se\/en\/snus-and-covid-19-sweden-launches-new-research-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Snus and Covid-19: Sweden launches new research project"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Following pleas from a prominent tobacco harm reduction advocate, researchers in Sweden are now examining the relationship between nicotine in snus and Covid-19 using a unique Swedish data set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSweden has a unique opportunity because we are alone in having such widespread use of snus,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/staff.ki.se\/people\/cecmag\">Cecilia Magnusson<\/a>, Adjunct Professor of Public Health Epidemiology at Karolinska Institutet tells the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dn.se\/nyheter\/sverige\/svenska-forskare-undersoker-om-snus-kan-skydda-mot-allvarlig-covid-19\/\">Dagens Nyheter (DN) newspaper<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Magnusson, who also runs the Stockholm\nCounty\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.slso.sll.se\/forskning-och-utveckling\/centrum-for-epidemiologi-och-samhallsmedicin\/\">Centre for Epidemiology and Community Medicine<\/a>,\nhas co-authored a number of studies examining the health effects of snus,\nincluding a study concluding that non-smoking men who used snus had a<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27940486\/\">\nsubstantially lower risk of Parkinson\u2019s disease.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her research group is now examining snus\nand tobacco use data in Sweden\u2019s unique patient data registries to see if they\ncan find any connection to how different patients were affected by Covid-19. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Snus a safer alternative<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>News of the study comes following the\npublication of a <a href=\"https:\/\/snusforumet.se\/nicotine-and-covid-19-the-world-needs-swedens-help\/\">Snusforumet guest column<\/a> by Mark Oates of the <a href=\"https:\/\/nnalliance.org\/\">New Nicotine\nAlliance (NNA)<\/a> in which he argues that widespread use of snus puts\nSweden in a unique position to help the world better understand the\nrelationship between nicotine and Covid-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSweden has already saved thousands of lives thanks to Swedish snus giving people a safer alternative to smoking cigarettes. Let\u2019s hope Sweden can once again seize the opportunity for snus to contribute to reducing the harm associated with Covid-19,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em><strong>READ MORE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/snusforumet.se\/swedish-experience\/\">Learn about the Swedish Experience with tobacco harm reduction<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Magnusson tells DN she has also been\ncontacted by researchers in France who are also looking into nicotine\u2019s effects\non how symptoms develop in patients infected with the coronavirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Snus and Covid-19 connection?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Magnusson says her team could have\npreliminary results in as little as two months if they are able to gather\nenough data from existing patient registries. However, if further data is\nneeded, it may take another 8 to 9 months to gather and analyse survey\nresponses from Covid-19 patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If researchers in Sweden see indications\nthat snus offers some level of protection against Covid-19, it would strengthen\nthe hypothesis that nicotine binds to the same receptors that the coronavirus\nuses to enter cells and reproduce. That could eventually lead to nicotine being\nused as a form of treatment for the illness, says Magnusson. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s possible that people who are\ncurrently thinking about quitting snus might choose to wait until after the\npandemic,\u201d she told DN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>News of the Swedish research project was\nwelcomed by Oates, a UK-based tobacco harm reduction advocate and founder of\nthe <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/snusassociation?lang=en\">UK Snus Users Association<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe announcement of this study into\nnicotine use and Covid-19 patients is excellent news in the fight against this\nawful virus,\u201d he tells Snusforumet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSweden is in a unique position due to its\nuse of snus and it could well lead to a number of lives being saved around the\nworld.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reshape the debate about snus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The results of the study could also help\nreframe the ongoing debate in Sweden and the European Union about the harm\nreduction potential of snus, says Patrik Str\u00f6mer, head of the Association of\nSwedish Snus Manufacturers (Svenska Snustillverkarf\u00f6reningen).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEven before the pandemic, snus had the potential to <a href=\"http:\/\/snuskommissionen.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Snuskommissionen_rapport3_eng_PRINT.pdf\">save more than 350,000 lives a year<\/a> in Europe by offering a safer nicotine alternative to deadly smoking,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis study and others like it should help policymakers in Stockholm, Brussels, and elsewhere understand that not all forms of nicotine delivery are equally harmful and that policies should be based on science rather than anti-tobacco dogma.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>READ MORE:<\/strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/snusforumet.se\/swedish-experience\/\">Discover more about snus and the Swedish Experience<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Following pleas from a prominent tobacco harm reduction advocate, researchers in Sweden are now examining the relationship between nicotine in snus and Covid-19 using a&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":4093,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[22],"tags":[302,287,303,296],"class_list":["post-4904","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-science","tag-covid-19-2","tag-karolinska-2","tag-mark-oates-2","tag-nicotine-2"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
